About the position

The Patient Care Technician at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago plays a vital role in providing basic daily care to patients and supporting their significant others. This position involves performing various service duties and routine technical tasks to assist patients with hygiene and daily living activities, while maintaining a clean and orderly care environment. The technician is expected to demonstrate core attributes such as communication, accountability, and customer service, contributing to the institute's mission of advancing human ability through integrated science and clinical care.

Responsibilities

  • Provides basic daily care to patients, including hygiene and daily living activities.
  • Maintains patient care areas in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Assists patients with ingestion of food and fluids, elimination of body wastes, mobilization, and dressing/undressing.
  • Performs and records routine technical tasks such as taking vital signs and collecting specimens.
  • Collects and reports pertinent physiological, psychological, and functional data based on patient needs.
  • Orients patients and families to the environment and safety hazards.
  • Implements interventions consistent with the plan of care as directed by a registered nurse.
  • Observes patients and reports changes in condition to the registered nurse.
  • Assists in transferring patients and patient care equipment.
  • Documents functional care and procedures in the nursing database.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • CNA Certification or current enrollment in an accredited nursing program required.
  • Successful completion of the Patient Care Technician orientation is required.
  • Demonstrates competency in applying principles of growth and development for various patient age groups.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to adapt to changing work demands and environments.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking skills and sound judgment in monitoring patient needs.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a healthcare setting is preferred.
  • Bilingual skills may be beneficial.
