About the position
The position functions as part of the dialysis healthcare team, providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the supervision of a licensed nurse. The role involves the setup and operation of hemodialysis machines, maintaining a clean working environment, and supporting quality enhancement programs aimed at improving patient satisfaction and outcomes.
Responsibilities
- Assist in providing patient-specific education regarding dialysis adequacy measures and disease processes.
- Welcome assigned patients and evaluate their wellbeing since the last treatment.
- Perform vascular access cannulation and administer heparin as delegated.
- Obtain pre and post-treatment vital signs and weight, and evaluate vascular access before treatment.
- Initiate dialysis treatment according to prescribed orders and monitor patients' responses during therapy.
- Document all relevant treatment information accurately and timely on the Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet.
- Report significant changes in patient conditions to the registered nurse or supervisor.
- Conduct machine safety checks and ensure appropriate safety alarms are enabled.
- Assist in training direct patient care staff under the supervision of a nurse.
- Maintain cleanliness and safety of the working environment, including disinfecting equipment and surfaces.
- Participate in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities and document participation.
Requirements
- High School diploma or G.E.D. required.
- Must meet CMS-approved state and/or national certification requirements.
- Previous patient care experience in a hospital setting or related facility preferred.
- Successful completion of the organization's dialysis training program and CPR certification.
