About the position

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) - Dialysis Preceptor plays a crucial role in the dialysis healthcare team, providing safe and effective dialysis therapy under the supervision of a licensed nurse. This position involves the setup and operation of hemodialysis machines, patient education, and ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations. The PCT is also responsible for maintaining a clean and safe working environment, participating in quality improvement activities, and supporting the training and orientation of new staff.

Responsibilities

• Assist healthcare team in providing patient-specific education regarding dialysis adequacy measures.
• Welcome assigned patients and evaluate their wellbeing since the last treatment.
• Perform vascular access cannulation and administer heparin as delegated.
• Obtain pre and post-treatment vital signs and weight, and evaluate vascular access.
• Initiate dialysis treatment according to prescribed orders and monitor patients' responses.
• Document treatment parameters and report significant changes in patient conditions to the registered nurse.
• Participate in the recruitment and training of new clinical staff.
• Deliver ongoing competency evaluations for other PCTs.
• Collaborate with Clinical Managers to drive quality standards through education.
• Ensure compliance with infection control practices and assist with audits.

Requirements

• High School diploma or G.E.D. required; Bachelor's degree preferred.
• Valid PCT national certification or state-specific certification as defined by CMS.
• At least five years of patient care experience in a hospital setting or related facility preferred.
• Attendance in all applicable preceptor training programs.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience in a dialysis setting is preferred.
• Knowledge of Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities.
