About the position

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) plays a crucial role in the dialysis healthcare team, providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the supervision of a licensed nurse. This position involves the setup and operation of hemodialysis machines, monitoring patient conditions, and ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations. The PCT is also responsible for maintaining a clean and safe working environment and actively participating in quality enhancement programs to improve patient satisfaction and care outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Assist healthcare team in providing patient-specific education regarding dialysis adequacy measures.
  • Welcome assigned patients and assess their wellbeing since the last treatment.
  • Evaluate vascular access for patency and perform cannulation as delegated.
  • Obtain pre and post-treatment vital signs and weight, and evaluate vascular access pre-treatment.
  • Initiate dialysis treatment according to prescribed orders and monitor patients' responses.
  • Document treatment parameters and report any significant changes in patient condition to the registered nurse.
  • Ensure safety alarms on dialysis machines are enabled and perform machine safety checks.
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff under the supervision of a nurse.
  • Participate in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities and maintain environmental integrity.
  • Collect and prepare laboratory specimens for testing.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Valid PCT national certification or state-specific certification as defined by CMS.
  • At least two years of previous patient care experience in a hospital or related facility preferred.
  • Successful completion of the organization's dialysis training program and CPR certification.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a healthcare setting with direct patient care responsibilities.
  • Knowledge of infection control practices and procedures.
