About the position
The Patient Care Assistant (PCA) role at the University of Southern California (USC) involves providing essential support to nursing staff in a medical-surgical stepdown unit. This per diem position focuses on patient care delivery, clerical functions, and maintaining a safe and organized unit environment. The PCA is responsible for responding to patient needs, assisting with daily activities, and ensuring patient safety and satisfaction.
Responsibilities
- Respond to patient calls within 10 minutes and anticipate patient needs.
- Perform essential skills such as taking vitals, daily weights, and assisting with hygiene and mobility.
- Maintain clear and organized patient rooms and assist with meals and feeding.
- Ensure a safe physical environment and proper operation of patient-care equipment.
- Document all care provided, including vital signs and patient care activities.
- Communicate effectively with patients and visitors, explaining the plan of care and maintaining confidentiality.
- Collaborate with the RN regarding patient care and report significant changes in patient condition.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Graduate from an accredited Certified Nursing Program.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Certified Nursing Assistant (CA DPH) certification required.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider certification from American Heart Association required.
- Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) certification required within 30 days of hire.
