About the position

The Patient Account Specialist is responsible for all activities related to the transfer of patient accounts to the extended business office. This role requires tact and diplomacy to ensure good patient relations and to project a credible and professional image of Northwestern Medical Center and Patient Financial Services. The specialist must display sensitivity to patient concerns and handle confidential financial information while performing activities in compliance with hospital policies and state and federal regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the reconciliation and transfer of patient account balances to the extended business office and bad debt collector, including resolution of credit balance accounts.
  • Acts as a conduit to patients for the financial assistance program.
  • Aids uninsured or underinsured patients in acquiring health insurance.
  • Provides service estimates to patients as requested.
  • Exercises tact and diplomacy while maintaining a professional, efficient, and courteous response to all inquiries.
  • Attends department meetings and reports current issues; communicates effectively in team meetings.
  • Seeks to improve knowledge and experience in healthcare billing and reform.
  • Meets productivity and performance standards set by the department manager.
  • Follows all policies and procedures of the department and actively participates in process improvement.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required; Associate's Degree preferred.
  • 2 years of business office experience preferred.
  • Attention to detail and excellent customer service skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication (written and oral), and negotiating skills.
  • Ability to listen and relate to patients with compassion and empathy.
  • Independent work habits and excellent judgment.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills.
