About the position

The Patient Access Specialist at the University of Miami is responsible for coordinating various complex duties that support the front-end revenue cycle and clinic functions, significantly impacting the patient experience. This role serves as a functional expert for department peers, ensuring adherence to established policies and procedures while managing patient information and financial clearance for scheduled accounts.

Responsibilities

  • Obtain, confirm, and enter demographic, financial, and clinical information for financial clearance of scheduled patient accounts.
  • Contact patients' families or physicians' offices to obtain missing insurance information.
  • Verify insurance and confirm eligibility of patient coverage benefits, notifying patients and referring physicians of any issues.
  • Collaborate with scheduling departments to identify add-on patients.
  • Obtain necessary authorizations, pre-certifications, and referrals.
  • Notify patients of liabilities prior to the date of service and collect funds accordingly.
  • Maintain appropriate records, files, and accurate documentation in the system of record.
  • Serve as a lead resource for lower-level Patient Services staff.
  • Recommend new approaches to management for enhancing performance and productivity.
  • Respond to a variety of technical issues from patients, physicians, and employees via phone, email, web messages, fax, or email.
  • Work independently and manage stress effectively due to heavy workload and complex patient inquiries.
  • Serve as a role model and coach in developing a culture of compassion and caring among staff, patients, and families.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience.
  • Skill in data entry and completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
  • Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Ability to analyze, organize, and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills with a commitment to service excellence.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, software systems, and technologies simultaneously.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients and staff.
  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting procedures and principles.
