About The Position

Under supervision of the Laboratory Supervisor, the pathology support tech ensures proper preparation, handling, labeling, and transport of specimens, maintains equipment and inventory; and assists Pathologists with diagnostic procedures such as frozen sections. Upholds accuracy, safety, and compliance with medical, ethical, and legal standards.

Responsibilities

  • Receives, documents, and labels pathology specimens.
  • Assists in specimen preparation for analysis, including fixation and staining.
  • Ensures proper storage and transport per protocols.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the use of HIS and LIS software systems in all job-related functions.
  • Prepare solutions, stains, and reagents for rapid diagnoses.
  • Slide staining (Touch/squash preps and Diff Quick) for Pathologists.
  • Assist Pathologist with Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) and frozen section procedures.
  • Preparation of grossing area for Pathologists.
  • Operates, maintains and troubleshoots all technical equipment according to approved standard operating procedures.
  • Follows quality control policies, documents all related activities, and maintains records of instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance.
  • Manage inventory by rotating stock and checking supply expiration dates to ensure availability and compliance.
  • Assists with training of team members and students.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and practice of all Atlantic Health and department safety procedures.
