About the position
The Pathologists' Assistant at HCA Healthcare is responsible for assisting pathologists in surgical pathology services, ensuring high-quality patient care. This role involves independent work under the supervision of pathologists, focusing on the examination and preparation of surgical pathology specimens, while maintaining efficient workflow processes.
Responsibilities
- Assist pathologists in the performance of surgical pathology services.
- Organize and ensure efficiency of workflow processes in the frozen section and gross examination areas.
- Work closely with on-site pathologists to determine grossing priorities.
- Take instruction from pathologists regarding grossing techniques and quality assessment.
- Triage specimens received from surgery and dictate gross findings using appropriate terminology.
- Select and identify tissue for microscopic study and determine proper fixative solutions.
- Perform specialized procedures such as frozen sections and decalcification.
- Maintain records of surgical pathology specimen dissections and dictation.
- Photograph specimen samples for instruction and documentation purposes.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- ASCP Certification preferred.
- Master's degree from an accredited Pathologist Assistant program preferred.
- 3-5 years of grossing experience in a hospital setting accepted in lieu of ASCP Certification or Master's degree.
- Minimum three to five years' experience in a pathology histology laboratory setting.
