About the position

The Paraprofessional-Specialized Services provides support to special education students under the supervision of a special education teacher. This role assists with the physical, social, emotional, and instructional needs of students with disabilities in both special and general education settings. The position focuses on supporting student skill development to enable successful transitions into general education settings. The paraprofessional will work with various programs including ISET, RESET, SAILS, CANS, and ECSE, which cater to students with significant social, emotional, behavioral, cognitive, and developmental needs.

Responsibilities

  • Help meet the individual needs of students, including transferring them to and from wheelchairs, lifting and positioning them, and signing or interpreting instructions for them.
  • Assist students with physical needs and personal care including feeding, bathroom needs, and personal hygiene.
  • Manage the behavior of assigned students, intervening in crisis situations and restraining disruptive or dangerous behavior as needed.
  • Learn and adapt to each student's special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs.
  • Work with assigned students or small groups to develop motor skills and conduct instructional exercises assigned by the teacher.
  • Supervise students throughout the day in various settings including the classroom, cafeteria, and during field trips.
  • Keep teachers informed of special needs or problems of assigned students.
  • Adapt instructional materials under the direction of the teacher.
  • Work one-on-one and/or in small groups as directed by the teacher.
  • Collect data regarding student progress.
  • Assist teacher in preparing instructional materials and classroom displays.
  • Help maintain a neat and orderly classroom.
  • Assist with inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment.
  • Help teacher keep administrative records and prepare required reports.
  • Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.
  • Maintain confidentiality.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Valid Texas Education Aide Certification preferred.
  • Ability to work well with children with disabilities.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written directives.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Bilingual preferred.
  • Two years experience working with children.

Benefits

  • Hourly pay range minimum is $15.18; pay based upon experience.
  • Will work 7.5 hours daily, normally work 187 days annually.
