About the position

The Secondary Special Programs Paraprofessional Educator plays a crucial role in supporting special education services under the guidance of a special education teacher. This position focuses on providing instructional assistance to students with special needs, primarily within special education classrooms, while also engaging in various school settings. The educator is responsible for implementing individualized education plans (IEPs) and ensuring that students receive the necessary support to thrive academically and socially.

Responsibilities

  • Implement special education services and support for students under the supervision of a special education teacher.
  • Prepare or modify instructional materials, including assistive technology devices for student use.
  • Collect data in accordance with student IEP goals and objectives as directed by certified special education staff.
  • Collaborate and work cooperatively with colleagues and staff.
  • Follow written and oral instructions and independently follow through on teacher-directed programming/strategies.
  • Attend to and provide for students' daily hygiene, personal, and health-related care as directed by certified special education staff.
  • Provide detailed information on students' functioning and progress to assist teachers and related service personnel.
  • Assist in positioning/range of motion tasks for students, including lifting and transferring between apparatus.
  • Assume safety responsibilities for students during community-based instruction and vocational training.
  • Support students in participating in community, recreational, school, and leisure activities.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must meet paraprofessional requirements for the state of Alaska through one of the following methods: 48 college semester credits, a passing score on the ETS Paraprofessional Assessment exam, passing the WorkKeys by ACT assessment, or passing the ASD provided Master Teacher paraprofessional training.
  • Basic literacy skills in reading, writing, and math.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with staff, parents, students, and the public.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and inspire confidence and cooperation.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of first aid.
  • One year of experience working with children with significant disabilities.
  • Basic experience with office equipment and computer literacy skills including word processing, printing, and e-mail.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and behavior plans under the direction of a special education teacher.
  • Ability to remain calm and maintain a professional demeanor during times of conflict.
