About the position

The Paraprofessional Counselor at Gateways Hospital and Mental Health Center plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and security of the Percy Village facility. This position involves monitoring client behavior, assisting with daily operations, and providing support to both clients and staff. The counselor is responsible for conducting regular rounds, reporting safety hazards, and maintaining communication with team members to ensure a safe environment for all residents.

Responsibilities

  • Monitors safety and security of the facility by conducting regular rounds and property searches.
  • Monitors client behavior and reports relevant information to the next shift.
  • Assists staff with answering telephones and signing clients in and out of the facility.
  • Assists with client meals and initiates disciplinary action as needed.
  • Maintains communication with team members throughout the shift to ensure all tasks are covered.
  • Provides client transportation as needed.
  • Conducts random security checks of premises and buildings at least hourly throughout the shift.
  • Reports safety hazards, maintenance, and housekeeping needs to the Residential Manager.
  • Observes and records resident's behavior and activities, prompting clients to engage in ADLs as necessary.
  • Monitors and ensures that clients take prescribed psychotropic medications and records emergency medications accurately.
  • Initiates Incident Reports when appropriate and participates in their investigation.
  • Responds appropriately to emergency situations and notifies relevant authorities as needed.
  • Assists in situational crisis intervention as needed.
  • Provides a good role model for residents in terms of reliability and professionalism.
  • Participates in Paraprofessional counselor meetings and in-service training.
  • Assists the treatment team in arranging emergency transportation for psychiatric and medical emergencies.
  • Maintains an objective, professional relationship with clients.

Requirements

  • One year experience in mental health, social services, or counseling.
  • High School Diploma
  • Must pass DOJ, FBI, and CCL background clearance.
  • Valid California Driver's license.
  • TB clearance.
  • Driving record acceptable for coverage by Gateways insurance carrier.
  • Fire and Safety Training certification (to be obtained within 180 days of hire).
  • First Aid Training Certification (to be obtained within 180 days of hire).
  • CPR Certification (to be obtained within 180 days of hire).
  • Crisis Prevention Institute Training (CPI) to be completed within 30 days from the date of hire.
