About the position

The Paralegal position at the Dallas County Attorney's office is responsible for providing essential administrative and professional support. This role involves preparing legal documents, reviewing police reports, assisting attorneys with trial preparation, and ensuring compliance with court rules. The paralegal will interact with law enforcement, witnesses, and crime victims, supporting statutory duties as outlined by the Code of Iowa.

Responsibilities

  • Obtain and review police reports and criminal histories for accuracy and completeness.
  • Prepare legal pleadings including motions, transport orders, and other documents as requested by attorneys.
  • Receive and docket lab reports, communicate with law enforcement and lab personnel regarding evidence status.
  • Request, review, and redact medical records as necessary.
  • Review law enforcement referrals for appropriate charges and evidentiary needs.
  • Proofread, review, and file court documents using the Electronic Document Management System (EDMS).
  • Assist attorneys with legal research and trial preparation, including witness coordination and evidence organization.
  • Assist with jury selection and tracking of exhibits during trials.
  • Review legal pleadings prepared by interns for accuracy and file documents in EDMS.
  • Serve as back-up for the Victim Witness Coordinator as needed.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice or two or more years of experience in a law office or similar legal organization.
  • Knowledge of drafting legal documents and understanding legal terminology.
  • Familiarity with the criminal justice process, civil law, and court procedures.
  • Skills in prioritizing, planning, and working independently.
  • Ability to meet internal and external deadlines and think critically.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and effective communication abilities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Adobe programs.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with trial preparation and court procedures.
  • Familiarity with the Electronic Document Management System (EDMS).
