About the position

The Sustainability Paralegal at the New York City Department of Buildings plays a crucial role in supporting the enforcement of the city's climate policies, particularly Local Law 97, aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions from large buildings. This position involves case management, legal research, document preparation, and collaboration with the Sustainability Bureau to ensure compliance and effective enforcement of sustainability initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting with case management throughout the legal process, maintaining a caseload.
  • Performing routine legal research and summaries, drafting legal communications for review by higher-level staff.
  • Preparing legal documents from templates for filing or serving upon interested parties.
  • Assisting attorneys with trial preparation.
  • Obtaining, reviewing, updating, and maintaining physical and/or electronic files.
  • Working with Sustainability Bureau staff to promote effective enforcement and compliance.
  • Completing special projects and assignments.
  • Performing routine administrative duties when necessary, including photocopying, filing, and scanning.

Requirements

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university; or an associate degree with two years of full-time satisfactory experience in paralegal services; or a high school diploma with four years of full-time satisfactory experience in paralegal services; or a satisfactory combination of education and/or experience equivalent to the above.
  • Paralegal Certification from an accredited program can substitute for 12 months of experience.
  • Experience in paralegal services must involve the American Legal System.
