About the position

The Paraeducator position at Hoquiam School District No. 28 primarily supports academic and intervention instruction at Lincoln. This position is open until filled and will conclude at the end of the 2024-2025 school year. It is important to note that this is not a continuing permanent position. The role involves various duties aimed at assisting students in their educational journey, particularly in areas of academic instruction and behavioral support.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all academic functions in basic areas of instruction and assist students in those areas
  • Become familiar with classroom terminology
  • Provide supplementary support of the skills taught in the child's classroom using drill and additional practice
  • Maintain discipline in instructional or unstructured areas
  • Implement behavioral programs in a calm and consistent manner
  • Reinforce and maintain instruction as directed by the teacher
  • Clerical duties as required for the general instruction program and/or special education program
  • Gather materials for the continuation of the school program as needed by the teacher
  • Uphold the confidential nature of matters concerning students, teachers, and the school
  • Assist in adaptive physical program or therapeutics as directed
  • Meet the physical needs of the student
  • Mark/score tests and correct pupil work
  • Type and/or reproduce materials
  • Distribute and account for materials and equipment
  • Maintain a neat and orderly station environment
  • Attend training sessions for professional development
  • Monitor classroom when requested by building principal
  • Maintain neat and clean personal appearance
  • Demonstrate a willingness to receive and follow directions
  • Maintain personable and friendly relations with faculty members
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Completed two years of study at an institution of higher education, obtained an associate's degree, or met a rigorous standard of quality through a formal assessment
  • Successful experience in implementing Reading Interventions curricula: Read Naturally, Phonics for Reading, Rewards
  • Must be physically capable of assisting if students become aggressive
  • Training in restraint, crisis management, de-escalation, playground management preferred
  • Preferably previous experience in working with and/or defusing crisis situations
  • Proof of citizenship (driver's license, birth certificate, social security card, passport, etc.)
  • First aid and CPR certification
  • Background check
  • Type II driving permit (willingness to get one if required for the job)
  • Good organizational and communication skills, clerical abilities, computer knowledge, ability to work independently

Nice-to-haves

  • Training in restraint, crisis management, de-escalation, playground management
  • Previous experience in working with and/or defusing crisis situations
