About the position

The Surgical Coder position at Banner Health is a fully remote role focused on coding a variety of surgical and procedural accounts, particularly within Orthopedics. The ideal candidate will have over three years of coding experience and be fully certified as a CPC or CCS. Responsibilities

  • Analyzes medical information from medical records and accurately codes diagnostic and procedural information according to national coding guidelines.
  • Consults with medical providers to clarify missing or inadequate record information and determines appropriate diagnostic and procedure codes.
  • Abstracts clinical diagnoses and procedure codes into electronic medical records, ensuring completeness and accuracy.
  • Provides quality assurance for medical records, ensuring compliance with coding rules and regulations.
  • Compiles daily and monthly reports and tabulates data from medical records for research or analysis purposes.
  • Identifies validation edits and revision issues to ensure compliant coding.
  • Works independently under regular supervision, utilizing specialized knowledge for accurate assignment of ICD/CPT codes.

Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge and specialized formal training equivalent to a two-year certification course in medical record keeping principles and practices.
  • Active certification as a Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) from AHIMA or AAPC.
  • Three or more years of complex professional coding experience within specialty, particularly in Orthopedics.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of ICD and CPT coding principles.

Nice-to-haves

  • Specialty Certification in Radiology (RCC) if employed in the Imaging space.
  • Experience in a large, multi-system physician practice.
