About the position

The Surgical Coder position at Banner Health is a fully remote role focused on coding a variety of surgical and procedural accounts, particularly within Orthopedics. The ideal candidate will have over three years of coding experience and be fully certified as a CPC or CCS. This role involves analyzing medical records, ensuring compliance with coding guidelines, and providing quality assurance for medical records. The position offers flexible working hours and opportunities for overtime on special projects.

Responsibilities

• Analyzes medical information from medical records and accurately codes diagnostic and procedural information according to national coding guidelines.
• Consults with medical providers to clarify missing or inadequate record information and determines appropriate diagnostic and procedure codes.
• Abstracts clinical diagnoses and procedure codes into electronic medical records, ensuring completeness and accuracy.
• Provides quality assurance for medical records, ensuring compliance with coding rules and regulations.
• Compiles daily and monthly reports and tabulates data from medical records for research or analysis purposes.
• Identifies validation edits and revision issues to ensure compliant coding.
• Works independently under regular supervision, utilizing specialized knowledge for accurate assignment of ICD/CPT codes.

Requirements

• High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge and specialized formal training equivalent to a two-year certification course in medical record keeping principles and practices.
• Active certification as a Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) from AHIMA or AAPC.
• Three or more years of complex professional coding experience within specialty, particularly in Orthopedics.
• Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of ICD and CPT coding principles.

Nice-to-haves

• Specialty Certification in Radiology (RCC) if employed in the Imaging space.
• Experience in a large, multi-system physician practice.
