About the position

The Doctor of Optometry provides primary vision care, examining patients' eyes to diagnose vision problems and eye diseases. Responsibilities include testing visual acuity, depth and color perception, and the ability to focus and coordinate eyes. The optometrist prescribes eyeglasses and contact lenses, provides vision therapy, and low-vision rehabilitation. Effective communication with patients and staff is essential to ensure quality patient care and an optimum patient experience.

Responsibilities

  • Communicate with patients in a professional and courteous manner; introduce self and explain role to the patient and/or the patient's family.
  • Examine patients' eyes to diagnose eye disease, vision defects, abnormalities, and injuries.
  • Take anatomical and functional ocular measurements of the eye and surrounding tissue.
  • Test ocular functions, including visual acuity and visual fields; perform refractions and retinoscopy.
  • Perform diagnostic tests that help ensure the accurate diagnosis and treatment of a diseased eye.
  • Educate patients on the best practices to enhance the health of their eyes.
  • Prescribe glasses, contact lenses, or other corrective eyewear to improve the patient's vision.
  • Refer to ophthalmologist for evaluation of medical conditions and treatment for diseases of the eye.
  • Provide preoperative and/or postoperative care to cataract patients and patients who have had laser vision correction or other eye surgery.
  • Keep current with trends in the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases.
  • Demonstrate team values through cooperation and consideration of coworkers.
  • Foster teamwork among staff and colleagues to ensure quality patient care and the optimum patient experience.
  • Protect confidential patient information and use good judgment in sharing patient information.
  • Adhere to all safety standards as established by company policy and OSHA requirements.
  • Perform work in compliance with company policy, department procedures, and regulatory requirements.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Optometry degree.
  • Current license in good standing in the Oregon State.
  • Knowledge of devices, equipment, and tools used in the examination of the eyes.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and people management skills.
