About the position

The Optometric Technician plays a crucial role in supporting optometrists by performing various patient care activities, including pre-testing and post-exam duties. This position is focused on ensuring a professional and pleasant experience for patients while assisting in the efficient operation of the practice.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preliminary evaluations of patients prior to exams by the OD, including dilation and administering diagnostic medications.
  • Conduct verbal interviews with patients to determine medical issues and reasons for their visit.
  • Assist ODs in caring for patients in a timely manner, adhering closely to the appointment schedule.
  • Instruct patients on medical care as prescribed by the doctor's treatment plan and schedule follow-up appointments as needed.
  • Discuss Lasik options with patients and identify interested candidates by reviewing patient information forms.
  • Schedule referral appointments with Ophthalmologists and complete necessary paperwork.
  • Record and maintain patient records in compliance with HIPAA and company policies.
  • Respond to patient inquiries regarding medications and treatments, referring to the OD as necessary.
  • Identify candidates for FDT testing according to company standards.
  • Complete proper coding of procedures for payment collection.
  • Participate in practice meetings and projects as requested.
  • Ensure maximum OD utilization through appointment confirmations and patient outreach.
  • Call no-shows or canceled patients to reschedule appointments.
  • Conduct contact lens insertion and removal classes and manage contact lens trial inventory.
  • Perform end-of-day responsibilities, including opti-schedule wrap-up and checklist completion.
  • Make recommendations for process improvements to enhance quality and profitability.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED qualification.
  • Entry-level PC skills, including Microsoft Office, Windows, and word processing.
  • Ability to work successfully in a team environment, prioritizing team goals over individual goals.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for effective collaboration with co-workers and patients.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience evaluating patients for eye exams and dispensing eye exam medications.
  • Familiarity with medical terms associated with eye treatment.
  • Experience maintaining patient records in compliance with HIPAA regulations.
