About the position

The OPS Biological Scientist IV position involves conducting overdose surveillance as part of the Overdose Data to Action Program. The role focuses on collecting, abstracting, and recording patient health information from various sources to ensure data accuracy and completeness for quality improvement. The incumbent will interpret medical records related to drug overdoses and maintain knowledge of drug trends while adhering to data privacy laws.

Responsibilities

  • Collect, abstract, and record patient health information from medical records and databases.
  • Review records and abstract information such as demographics, medical history, and toxicology.
  • Ensure accuracy and completeness of data collected for quality improvement purposes.
  • Conduct systematic reviews of data from medical records for suspected drug overdoses.
  • Interpret medical diagnoses related to drug use and abstract relevant information into a case report database.
  • Maintain knowledge of drug types and trends, including emerging substances.
  • Ensure compliance with coding guidance and database changes.
  • Maintain logs, quality control checks, and confidentiality measures.
  • Provide progress reports and liaise with medical examiners, hospitals, and clinics.
  • Compile, interpret, report, and present data to program managers and directors.
  • Assist with other Epidemiology Program Disease investigations as needed.

Requirements

  • Senior level experience in biological sciences or related field.
  • Proficiency in data collection and analysis.
  • Knowledge of medical records and health information systems.
  • Understanding of drug overdose trends and toxicology.
