About the position

The Occupational Therapist interprets physician referrals and evaluates the patient's physical, perceptual, cognitive, social, and vocational abilities and their impact on the patient's activities of daily living. They establish a plan of care and implement individual treatment based on evaluation results, functional goals, and by utilizing appropriate techniques. The therapist provides and/or fabricates assistive devices and/or splints to enhance the patient's functional independence, monitors and evaluates outcomes, and appropriately adjusts the individualized treatment plan based on the patient's response, providing status updates to physicians and other teammates. They identify factors affecting the patient's physical and psychosocial comfort and attend to these needs. The therapist plans for and completes patient discharge, including providing written home programs, patient/family teaching, referral for community services, transition planning within the continuum of care, and ordering equipment as indicated/appropriate. They communicate and collaborate with appropriate stakeholders to assist in achieving optimum care for the patient. Additionally, they complete all required documentation following department policy and accreditation standards, including patient evaluations, progress notes, team conference reports, and discharge summaries. The therapist is responsible for maintaining site/department established productivity standards and understanding and adhering to all billing and documentation policies, procedures, and timelines. They also manage assigned caseloads, inform site leadership of coverage needs, and assist with coverage based on department and regional needs. The therapist pursues professional growth through participation in continuing education courses and department in-services, orients new staff to clinical and department policies, and may supervise occupational therapy assistants and students.

Responsibilities

  • Provides and/or fabricates assistive devices and/or splints to enhance patient's functional independence.
  • Monitors and evaluates outcomes and adjusts individualized treatment plan based on patient's response.
  • Identifies factors affecting patient's physical and psychosocial comfort.
  • Plans for and completes patient discharge including providing written home programs and patient/family teaching.
  • Communicates and collaborates with appropriate stakeholders to assist in achieving optimum care.
  • Completes all required documentation following department policy and accreditation standards.
  • Records patient care and progress of each patient assigned.
  • Completes daily statistics, billing, and scheduling.
  • Responsible for cleaning up after patient treatment and keeping area neat and orderly.
  • Performs various manual techniques, patient positioning, transferring and transporting duties.
  • Demonstrates skill in use of modalities, exercise equipment, and other devices.
  • Promotes patient safety by participating in safety initiatives.
  • Participates in performance improvement activities.
  • Manages assigned caseload and informs site leadership of coverage needs.
  • Pursues professional growth through continuing education and reading professional literature.
  • Orients new staff to clinical and department policies.
  • May supervise occupational therapy assistants and students.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Occupational Therapy from an accredited school.
  • Licensed OT for the State of Illinois or State of Wisconsin.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification.
  • No experience required.
  • Intermediate computer skills.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organization skills.
  • Demonstrated organization, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of principles of growth and development over the life span.
