The Nursing Director oversees day to day operations and manages goals and objectives including organizing, managing and controlling department functions and resources in a collaborative and participative manner for optimal performance of service. These include throughput of unit, quality, patient experience, employee engagement, assistance with goals and budget development and stewardship (accountability of budgets/fiscal operations as budget allows). The Nursing Director Provides leadership and monitors operational goals, objectives, and budgets for multiple departments. Plans budget, monitors revenues, patient care indicators and manages operating costs. Implements and monitors department budget and expenses. Responsible for operational plans and fiscal management including budget development, implementation and monitoring for multiple departments. May manage multiple departments, as well as designated administrative and support staff to assure cost effectiveness and achievement of goals and budgets. Ensures leadership throughput of unit, patient experience rounding, employee rounding for engagement, quality monitoring of unit, planning of budget and managing expenses. Communicates, organizes, prioritizes, leads, facilitates, coaches and problem solve with reporting staff to ensure that goals and objectives are met. (Quality, Patient Experience, Employee Engagement, and Throughput) Works with other department leaders to carry out new health care services and performance improvement initiatives. May provide direct patient care or assist employees in overall care of patients. Plans implementation of directives, standard policies and procedures and protocols as approved by Organizational Leadership. Utilizes a system approach. Aligns work with strategic goals. Creates a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients and families in accordance with standards and which is respectful of patient’s rights. Monitors and evaluates quality, appropriateness and safety of the care provided by the department. Implements nursing and/or organization’s solutions for quality or patient safety areas. Manages compliance with applicable regulatory, licensure and accrediting standards where applicable. Monitors and evaluates patient experience. Implements programs to continuously enhance patient experience in conjunction with senior service line management. Plans for growth, staffing, services, educational opportunities and effective performance improvement in collaboration with Human Resources. Provides staff opportunities to develop their maximum potential through professional growth and development including orientation in service programs and effective performance improvement systems. Coordinates resources to provide adequate staffing for department. Establishes day-to-day priorities and directs staff task assignments. Facilitates teams in problem solving processes. Facilitates professional growth and development including the provision or in-service education and an effective performance appraisal process. Utilizes developmental planning to expand employee skills and abilities. Hires, mentors, coaches, disciplines and terminates staff. Supervises and directs department staff. Versatile and flexible in leadership/management skills and work schedule.

Requirements

  • Education: Graduate of school of professional nursing. BSN Required
  • Experience: Minimum 5 years or equivalent experience in a leadership or management positions in a healthcare environment including clinical and operational expertise.
  • Licensure/Certifications/Registration: Currently licensed as Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Life Support: AHA BLS-HCP required.
  • Demonstrates effective team building and leadership skills.
  • Must possess ability to synthesize data.
  • Demonstrates excellent problem-solving, interpersonal, communication, team leadership, priority setting and work competency skills.
  • Promotes a respectful, inclusive culture of service excellence.
  • In Psychiatry and Behavioral Health must possess ability to appropriately handle/restrain patients who may be disruptive and/or physically violent.
  • In Psychiatry and Behavioral Health, de-escalation training must be successfully completed within four months of hire and then maintained going forward.
