About the position

The Nursing Assistant at the Department of Veterans Affairs will develop skills to participate in assessing, implementing, and evaluating nursing care under close supervision. This role involves providing personal nursing care to patients, ensuring their comfort and hygiene, and assisting with various medical tasks while adhering to established protocols and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Identify the needs of patients and perform personal nursing care duties including feeding, bathing, oral hygiene, and related personal hygiene tasks.
  • Provide post-mortem care and assist with the application and care of external catheters.
  • Utilize proper body mechanics to move, lift, and transfer patients safely.
  • Maintain a clean and neat environment for patients, including cleaning patient rooms and common areas as necessary.
  • Answer patient calls promptly and assist or escort patients to various locations as needed.
  • Assist patients in using Activities of Daily Living (ADL) devices and provide indwelling catheter care according to procedures.
  • Perform enteral tube feedings and provide individual care to critically ill or emotionally unstable patients.
  • Support patient choices, dignity, and autonomy in their care routines.
  • Participate in developing individual care plans during team conferences and offer emotional support to patients and their families.
  • Perform supporting diagnostic duties such as taking vital signs and collecting specimens for laboratory analysis.
  • Initiate CPR and/or Heimlich maneuver when necessary and observe patients receiving IV solutions for any issues.
  • Assemble oxygen equipment and provide continuity of oxygen therapy as directed by nursing staff.
  • Use aseptic techniques to apply and remove sterile dressings as directed by the professional nurse.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen to apply for this job.
  • Six months of general experience or one year of education above high school related to nursing care.
  • Completion of an intensive, specialized, occupation-related training course may also meet experience requirements for GS-3 level.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English is required.
  • Must pass a pre-employment physical evaluation and participate in the seasonal influenza vaccination program.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a medical field such as licensed practical nurse or health technician is preferred.
  • Completion of courses related to nursing care or healthcare is beneficial.
