About the position

The Nursing Assistant position at the Central Arkansas Veteran Healthcare System involves providing essential support to licensed nursing staff in caring for patients and residents across various healthcare settings. The role focuses on assisting with daily living activities, monitoring patient conditions, and ensuring safety and comfort for veterans receiving care. Nursing Assistants play a critical role in the healthcare team, contributing to the overall well-being of patients and facilitating their recovery process.

Responsibilities

  • Assists patients/residents with activities of daily living such as bathing, shaving, feeding, and dressing.
  • Supports lower graded Nursing Assistants in completing their duties.
  • Assists Registered Nurses and therapists in providing care and rehabilitation for patients/residents.
  • Prepares residents for therapy sessions and ensures their comfort during procedures.
  • Utilizes clean and aseptic techniques for non-medical treatments, including wound care and catheter management.
  • Monitors patients for signs of complications due to limited mobility and assists with mobility exercises.
  • Encourages proper nutrition and hydration according to dietary orders.
  • Monitors and reports on enteral feeding and intravenous fluids to nursing staff.
  • Maintains patient safety and participates in safety monitoring activities.
  • Trains and precepts new and lower graded staff in Nursing Assistant functions.
  • Establishes rapport with patients, families, and interdisciplinary teams to enhance care coordination.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • Six months of general experience or one year of education above high school related to nursing care.
  • Completion of a specialized training course in nursing assistance may also qualify for GS-3 level.
  • Ability to provide a range of patient care and contribute to nursing care plans.
  • Knowledge of basic life support (BLS) is preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is desired.
  • Knowledge of computer systems and standard software programs.
  • Experience in managing complex systems with advanced organizational skills.
