The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) is responsible for identifying the physical, social, and emotional health needs of individuals and families through systematic assessment and the utilization of professional skills, health history, physical evaluations, and laboratory and other diagnostic tools. The APRN utilizes specialized knowledge and skills in the provision of direct patient care and evaluates the effectiveness of care provided. This role includes delegating appropriate nursing care functions to registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, assistant nursing personnel, and students. The APRN also participates in staff development programs, including orientation, in-service, and continuing education for nursing and other agency personnel. Additionally, the APRN works towards developing innovative methods for addressing work-site problems and teaches and counsels individuals, families, and groups on health maintenance, disease prevention, and disability prevention. The role requires maintaining records and reports according to agency standards, prescribing and dispensing nonscheduled drugs as per a written practice agreement with a licensed physician, making appropriate referrals, and providing continuity of care for clients receiving services from multiple agencies. The APRN provides nursing expertise and consultation to nursing personnel and others, adheres to corporate compliance programs, ensures confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations, and performs other duties as assigned.
