The Nurse II (PRN Nurse) performs complex (journey level) nursing work under the direct supervision of the Assistant Chief Nurse Executive (CNE). They provide routine care and treatment through the application of the nursing process and are responsible for maintaining nursing standards of practice in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act, The Joint Commission (TJC) standards, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) conditions of participation, Texas Administrative Code (TAC), and the rules and regulations of the Agency and state hospital system. The PRN Nurse works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Responsibilities

  • Performs extensive initial and ongoing assessment of the patient's nursing care needs.
  • Collaborates with other health care professionals to develop a multidisciplinary recovery plan.
  • Evaluates the outcomes of nursing interventions and documents them in the medical record.
  • Provides comprehensive patient/family education regarding illness process, medications, coping skills, etc.
  • Establishes, monitors, and maintains the therapeutic milieu through clinical oversight and training of other nursing staff.
  • Supervises the administration of medications according to acceptable nursing care standards.
  • Acts as team leader in emergency situations.
  • Ensures adequate staffing for assigned and oncoming shifts.
  • Participates in disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation.

Requirements

  • Must be licensed as a registered nurse by the State of Texas or a state that recognizes reciprocity through the Nurse Licensure Compact.
  • At least one (1) year of work experience as an RN in a recognized health agency, hospital, or health care facility.
  • Knowledge of Texas Nurse Practice Act and the role of peer review in the provision of professional nursing.
  • Knowledge of HHSC policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of management theory, organizational planning, and improving organizational performance.
  • Knowledge of the Recovery Model of Care.
  • Knowledge of professional nursing standards, CPR, and nursing techniques and procedures.
