About the position

The Nurse Anesthetist administers anesthesia under medical direction for diversified surgical cases, utilizing inhalation, intravenous, spinal or rectal agents. Emphasis in the work is on skilled application of appropriate professional techniques, constant review of anesthetized patients' condition during surgery, and completion of remedial measures to counteract unfavorable clinical conditions. Incumbents are also responsible for immediate preoperative and postoperative care of patients in the introduction of and recovery from anesthesia. Work is performed in accordance with recognized professional principles and techniques. All procedures and techniques utilized during anesthesia for surgery are subject to supervision by the Attending Anesthesiologist assigned to that area.

Responsibilities

  • Participates and accurately documents patients pre-anesthetic preparation and evaluation.
  • Formulates a patient-specific plan for anesthesia care in collaboration with attending anesthesiologist.
  • Implements, monitors and adjusts patients physiologic condition as appropriate for type of anesthesia and specific patients needs.
  • Recognizes abnormal patient response to anesthesia and adjunct medications; takes appropriate action.
  • Demonstrates ability to work in a stressful environment by prioritizing and implementing corrective action based on the situation.
  • Provides observation, monitoring and resuscitation of patients in route to recovery room or to special care unit according to protocol.
  • Provides concise comprehensive anesthesia report to recovery room or unit nurse according to protocol.
  • Transfers the responsibility for care of the patient to other qualified providers post-operatively to assure continuity of care and patient safety.
  • Supports operating room procedures.
  • Keeps patient informed of their medical condition and the course of treatment being prescribed.
  • Functions independently in executing the day to day operational and administrative management duties / responsibilities in the absence of the Chief CRNA.
  • Participates in additional areas of responsibility, which are within the expertise of the individual CRNA.
  • Assumes responsibility for professional development of self and contributes to and assists with the professional development of others.
  • Initiates search of anesthesia and related literature, suggests changes and improvement in patient care standards.
  • Functions as a clinical educator for the student registered nurse anesthetists.
  • Follows and performs all related unit specific policies and procedures, as detailed on the unit specific competency check-list.
  • Utilizes job and unit specific equipment as required.
  • Demonstrates behaviors of service excellence and CARE values (Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Expertise).
  • Performs all other related job duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Generally requires 1 to 3 years of related experience.
  • Master's degree in Nursing is required.
  • Valid Florida licensed RN/CRNA or eligibility for licensure as CRNA/Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner.
  • National Board Certification by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) and any additional applicable life support certification for Healthcare Providers is required upon hire with at least 6 months validity and maintenance at JHS for the duration of employment.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) are required.
  • Must meet and maintain valid and current all unit specific and organizational skills/competencies, certifications/licensures, as required by regulatory and/or nursing standard of practice for the specialty.
