The Nurse 1 (Registered Nurse) position at the Grafton Correctional Institution involves providing comprehensive nursing care to patients within a correctional facility. The role focuses on administering medications, performing medical assessments, responding to emergencies, and collaborating with healthcare teams to ensure the well-being of inmates. This position is crucial in supporting the mission of the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction to reduce recidivism and promote health and wellness among individuals in the correctional system.

Responsibilities

• Administers medication (oral, intramuscular, and intravenous) and monitors patient medication compliance
• Performs treatments and assists with nurse's sick call
• Assists with doctor's sick call
• Manages chronic care clinics
• Responds to emergencies providing emergency care and cardiopulmonary resuscitation
• Performs subjective and objective assessments of patients
• Collects vital signs and documents findings
• Collects urine and/or other bodily fluid specimens
• Prepares patients for release or transfer to other facilities
• Ensures discharge medication orders are completed and forwarded to pharmacy services
• Participates in work-related training and institution training exercises
• Provides assistance to other healthcare staff
• Investigates and documents problem areas
• Reviews shift reports from preceding shifts
• Assists physicians with medical procedures
• Counsels patients regarding healthcare maintenance and disease prevention
• Participates in quality assurance activities
• Provides training and work direction to new nurses and other healthcare personnel
• Serves as a resource for healthcare and security staff
• Participates in group programming and health initiatives
• Performs administrative duties and attends meetings
• Schedules multidisciplinary team meetings
• Assumes duties of shift charge as assigned
• Performs inventory and ordering of medical supplies
• Assists ancillary staff to meet patient care needs

Requirements

• Current licensure as a registered professional nurse in the state of Ohio
• Experience in nursing, urgent and emergency care, and basic medical procedures
• Strong skills in medical charting, direct support/direct care, problem solving, critical thinking, decision making, teamwork, and cultural awareness

Nice-to-haves

• Experience in correctional healthcare settings
• Knowledge of rehabilitation and correctional programming
• Familiarity with quality assurance processes
