About the position

The NSRC at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking a full-time graduate student for a summer internship to support the Collections Management Team on archival projects. The role involves working with a classified library that houses extensive archival materials related to nuclear weapons. The selected candidate will assist in the arrangement, description, and processing of both physical and digital archival collections, with the goal of obtaining a Q clearance by Summer 2026 to handle classified materials.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the arrangement, description, and processing of archival collections, both physical and digital.
  • Conduct research to support archival and educational initiatives.
  • Collaborate with NSRC staff on digital preservation technologies and tools.
  • Develop skills in archival processing, indexing, and cataloging.
  • Contribute to the preservation and access of materials related to national security and scientific history.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a full-time graduate program in Library and Information Science (MLIS) or a closely related field.
  • Familiarity with physical archival processing and preservation.
  • Understanding of digital preservation best practices, including knowledge of digital workflows and metadata standards.
  • Strong organizational and research skills, with the ability to handle sensitive information with discretion.
  • Ability to communicate proactively in a professional setting and work effectively in team and solo environments.

Nice-to-haves

  • Ability to obtain a Q clearance.
  • Interest in programming languages such as Python, XML, SQL.
  • Familiarity with principles of taxonomy, classification, and ontologies.
  • Interest in semantic web technologies, controlled vocabularies, and thesaurus construction.
