About the position

The National Security Internship Program (NSIP) at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) offers highly qualified students the opportunity to engage in research and development critical to national security, energy, and science. Interns will work on challenging problems related to the prevention and countering of terrorism and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, focusing on areas such as chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosives measurement and materials characterization. The internship is available in Richland, WA and Seattle, WA, with options for remote work based on business needs. Participants will start in May or June 2025, joining a cohort in one of seven specialized focus areas.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in research and development projects related to national security.
  • Engage in applied radiation detection and measurement of radiological signatures.
  • Conduct fundamental and applied research in analytical chemistry and instrumentation.
  • Develop integrated experimental and data analytics techniques for threat detection.
  • Research nuclear materials, processes, and technologies.
  • Contribute to the design and analysis of advanced nuclear reactors and systems.
  • Support the development of sensitive radiation detection systems.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a PhD program at an accredited college.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.3.
