About the position

The NSIP Masters Intern position at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) focuses on engaging students in research and development related to national security, particularly in the fields of nuclear, chemistry, and biological technologies. Interns will tackle complex problems associated with counter-terrorism and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, contributing to the lab's mission of safeguarding national security through innovative research and technology.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in research and development projects related to national security, energy, and science.
  • Engage in one of seven focus areas: Applied Radiation Detection, Analytical Chemistry & Instrumentation, Chemical and Biological Signatures, Nuclear Material Processing, Nuclear Engineering, Radiochemistry, or Nuclear Signatures.
  • Collaborate with researchers to apply cutting-edge techniques in chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear measurement and materials characterization.
  • Contribute to the development of novel sensors and data analytics for threat detection.
  • Support the integration of experimental and analytical techniques to address national security challenges.

Requirements

  • Must be enrolled in a Master's program at an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.3 required.
  • Relevant coursework or experience in fields such as analytical chemistry, nuclear engineering, or data analytics.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in acoustics, biochemistry, computer science, forensic analysis, geospatial analysis, intelligence & security studies, nuclear physics, or software engineering.
  • Familiarity with advanced mass spectrometry techniques and chemical separation methods.
