About the position

The LPN position at the Night Crisis Care Center involves providing direct nursing services to individuals experiencing behavioral health and substance use crises. The role focuses on crisis stabilization, medical assessment, medication administration, and coordination of care with community mental health providers. The LPN will work in a multidisciplinary team to ensure clients receive comprehensive care and support during their crisis period.

Responsibilities

  • Obtain medical histories and provide medical screening.
  • Monitor changes in health status, including vital signs and nutritional needs.
  • Administer prescribed medications as directed by the Provider and document appropriately.
  • Manage the medication room, including carts and Pyxis.
  • Perform chart checks each shift and document medication errors according to agency policy.
  • Complete daily charting for LPN, including progress notes and CIWA/COWS assessments.
  • Respond to crisis situations that may involve physical intervention, including seclusion/restraint.
  • Assist in coordinating and implementing discharge plans to community agencies.
  • Follow up on medical concerns by providing direct nursing services to clients.
  • Monitor withdrawal complications, medication side effects, and emerging symptoms of mental illness.
  • Provide health education to groups and individuals.
  • Maintain up-to-date medical records in compliance with state and program requirements.
  • Participate in treatment team meetings as a member of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrate competency in various medical tests and screenings.
  • Monitor and document all ordered labs and screenings.
  • Perform safe phlebotomy practices when collecting blood.
  • Address medication issues with clients and provide education and guidance.
  • Transcribe verbal and written orders by the Provider accurately.
  • Perform all administrative duties as required.

Requirements

  • Licensed Practical Nurse with a current Alabama Nursing license.
  • Two years of experience working with serious mental illness and/or substance use populations preferred.
  • Familiarity with psychotropic and neuroleptic drugs, their uses, and potential side effects.
  • Valid American Red Cross CPR/First Aid certification.
  • Valid Alabama driver's license.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of the seriously mentally ill and substance use population.
  • Knowledge of special needs and behavioral characteristics of the seriously mentally ill and/or substance use adult population.
  • Assessment skills in physical and mental status.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and expressive.
  • Trained in or willing to be trained in crisis intervention, specifically Therapeutic Options.
