About The Position

The Evergreen State College seeks a broadly trained mycologist with a transdisciplinary understanding of fungi to teach one or more offerings within our undergraduate Mycology Certificate program: Topics in Mycology (fall 2026) and/or Fungi for Human Health and the Environment ( Spring 2026). We invite candidates who situate the scientific study of mycology within broader ecological, social, cultural or philosophical contexts. The successful candidate will introduce students to a specialized area of mycology—such as phytopathology or industrial mycology—while deepening their understanding fungi not only as biological entities but as key contributors to social, ecological, and creative systems, drawing on insights from the social sciences, environmental sciences, arts, or humanities. The spring 2026 course, Topics in Mycology , is a 4-credit online offering. The class meets synchronously Wednesday evenings with an option for up to half of the instruction to be delivered asynchronously using a Canvas learning management system. The fall 2026 class , Fungi for Human Health and the Environment, is an 8-credit, team-taught, hybrid offering with some in-person labs and workshops (on the Olympia Campus) in addition to synchronous and asynchronous online instruction. The class meets Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings. We invite candidates who situate the scientific study of mycology within broader ecological, social, cultural or philosophical contexts. The successful candidate will introduce students to a specialized area of mycology—such as phytopathology or industrial mycology—while deepening their understanding fungi not only as biological entities but as key contributors to social, ecological, and creative systems, drawing on insights from the social sciences, environmental sciences, arts, or humanities. We seek an engaging teacher/scholar with a strong commitment to excellence in teaching and prior academic and/or professional experience in the field of mycology. Our new colleague must be able to develop curriculum and work with minimal supervision while maintaining high standards of professionalism, punctuality, and content relevance for diverse learners. Requirements

  • Master’s of Science Degree (Botany, Biology, Mycology or related field)
  • Prior teaching and/or mentoring experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Masters’ Degree in Anthropology, Sociology, Health, Psychology, Environmental Humanities or a related field.
  • PhD or terminal degree in any field.
  • Substantial transdisciplinary study of mycology outside of biological science such as training in ethnomycology, environmental philosophy, political ecology, food or environmental justice, science journalism, or studies of fungi in history, literature, religion, or media.
  • Evidence of potential to successfully work with individuals from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Prior experience teaching/presenting in an online environment.
