About The Position

Under the guidance of the Vessel Manager and/or Project Manager, this position is responsible for overseeing the safe daily operations of the Multicat vessel. The captain will lead and manage all onboard activities, including navigation, engine operations, crane lifts, housekeeping, and the maintenance and repair of the vessel and its equipment. The Multicat will work alongside various company-owned dredging equipment and vessels, operating under the direct control of the dredge captain. Its duties will include transporting fuel, materials, equipment, and supplies, as well as serving as a tugboat, assisting with anchor setting, and performing dredge pipe work related to the dredging process.

Requirements

  • Must have 5+ years of captain experience on a work vessel.
  • Must be able to work away from home, sometimes, at remote project locations for at least 21 days.
  • Must have good people management skills, with the ability to train others.
  • Must maintain and keep up to date, all required licensing and/or certifications to operate the vessel.
  • Must be able to work in high-stress situations with the ability to multitask.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the oversight of the vessel, vessel operations, and vessel crew at all times.
  • Responsible for the safety of the crew members working aboard the MultiCat.
  • Responsible for the overall upkeep of the vessel and all vessel equipment.
  • Steering and operating the vessel, using e-charts, radios, depth finders, radars, lights, buoys, or lighthouses.
  • Docking/undocking the MultiCat and other vessels, at times maneuvering through narrow spaces and more shallow depths.
  • Maintaining vessel stability during all operations, including crane operations.
  • Supervising the loading/unloading of supplies including fuel transfers.
  • Maintaining and managing all crew members under the guidance and policies set forth by Callan Marine.
  • Delegating daily tasks to crew to ensure operational readiness.
  • Overseeing training and mentoring of crew members in duties and responsibilities in the event of: fire, man overboard, abandon ship, collision with another vessel or structure, grounding of the vessel or tow, tow break up, or spills.
  • Ensuring vessel and crew certifications required per U.S. Flagging and Jones Act requirements are maintained.
  • Supervising maintenance/inspections of the vessel and equipment on board, e.g., engines, winches, navigational systems, fire extinguishers, or life preservers, ensuring conformance to Coast Guard inspection regulations.
  • Signing of all bridge documentation, keeping duty logs, keeping all vessel documents up to date, etc.
  • Arranging vessel inspections/certifications (CMID/IMCA/PSC).
  • Acting as liaison between vessel and office, vessel and ship agents, vessel and Project management teams.
  • Ensuring compliance with all state and federal regulatory requirements.
  • Following company and work site safety policies/procedures, committing to an “incident and injury-free” work environment.
  • Managing and facilitating safety meetings, completing Job Safety Analysis (JSA), Hazard Analysis, and safety drills.
  • Participating in HSE initiatives, contributing to compliance with State/Federal regulations, and improving existing Co. programs.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
