About the position

The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking undergraduate students for an internship within the Threat Prevention and Resilience (TPR) groups under the National Security Directorate. This internship is designed for students interested in law and policy, particularly in areas related to national security, nuclear nonproliferation, and international relations. Interns will engage in research and programmatic support, contributing to both domestic and international efforts that promote U.S. Government security and nonproliferation objectives. The role offers a unique opportunity to work on multidisciplinary teams and apply technical expertise to address complex national security challenges.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to research and programmatic support for TPR programs.
  • Work on discrete pieces of larger projects or multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams to advance laboratory mission activities.
  • Seek out mentoring opportunities within the organization.
  • Utilize technical expertise in scientific, engineering, or policy disciplines to analyze and evaluate information.
  • Apply and interpret theories, principles, methods, tools, and technologies relevant to nonproliferation and nuclear security.
  • Develop creative solutions to national and international nuclear nonproliferation problems.
  • Gather, analyze, and evaluate information from various sources.

Requirements

  • Must have a high school diploma/GED or higher.
  • Must be a degree-seeking undergraduate student enrolled at an accredited college or university.
  • Must be taking at least 6 credit hours and have an overall cumulative GPA of 2.50.

Nice-to-haves

  • Enrolled in a Bachelor's program at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) as a participant in the CONNECT consortium.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including cross-cultural communication.
  • Experience performing open-source research.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and on multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Knowledgeable in at least one nonproliferation domain such as nuclear security or arms control.
  • Demonstrated experience applying quantitative and qualitative research techniques to inform policy.
  • Familiarity with federal organizations such as DOE, DHS, DOS, DOD, NNSA, and IAEA.
