About the position

The MSIPP CONNECT JD Intern position at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is designed for law students interested in national security, energy, and science policy. This internship offers a research-based experience focusing on complex problems in national security, particularly in areas such as nuclear nonproliferation and international relations. Interns will work within the Threat Prevention and Resilience (TPR) group, contributing to research and programmatic support while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to address national security challenges.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to research and programmatic support for TPR programs.
  • Work on discrete pieces of larger projects or multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Seek out mentoring opportunities and utilize technical expertise in relevant disciplines.
  • Apply and interpret theories, principles, methods, tools, and technologies within an area of specialty.
  • Provide technical expertise, analysis, and publishable products to advance scientific frontiers.
  • Gather, analyze, and evaluate information from various sources, utilizing expertise in scientific, engineering, or policy disciplines.
  • Develop creative solutions to national and international nuclear nonproliferation problems.
  • Augment knowledge of legal frameworks with practical applications in national security and nonproliferation.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a JD program at an accredited college.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0.
  • Experience with legal and policy research related to international relations is strongly preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including cross-cultural communication.
  • Experience performing open-source research.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and on multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Knowledgeable in at least one nonproliferation domain such as nuclear security or export control compliance.
  • Familiarity with federal organizations such as DOE, DHS, DOS, DOD, NNSA, and IAEA.
