About the position
The Motor Equipment Operator I position at Howard County involves operating motorized fleet and construction equipment to support the maintenance of the County's highway network. This semi-skilled role includes tasks such as hauling materials, performing routine maintenance on vehicles, and executing various manual labor tasks related to public works projects. The position is essential during emergencies and requires a commitment to safety and effective teamwork.
Responsibilities
- Operate dump trucks to haul materials for road construction and maintenance.
- Use motor vehicles and equipment with attachments for various tasks such as spreading salt and sand, installing pipes, and cutting grass.
- Operate highway striping vehicles and personnel lift trucks for maintenance tasks.
- Inspect and perform minor routine maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
- Keep logs of vehicle operations and report any defects or accidents.
- Perform semi-skilled manual tasks such as painting, mixing cement, and flagging traffic.
- Operate snow plows and salt spreaders during winter conditions.
- Patch roads and shoulders as needed.
- Direct traffic flow during work activities.
Requirements
- Completion of the tenth school grade and one year of experience operating large dump trucks or similar motor equipment.
- Experience in progressively responsible manual laboring work, including motor equipment operation.
Nice-to-haves
- Knowledge of traffic laws and safety procedures.
- Knowledge of motor equipment operation principles and practices.
- Some knowledge of carpentry and form building.
- Ability to learn the operation of heavy construction equipment.
