About the position

Make a splash in the lives of our youngest swimmers! The City of Missoula is seeking a dedicated Morning Preschool Swim Instructor to teach the basics of swimming and water safety to our littlest learners. This role is perfect for individuals who have a passion for working with children and a love for the water. As a Morning Preschool Swim Instructor, you will have the opportunity to create a positive and engaging learning environment for preschool-aged children, helping them develop essential swimming skills and safety techniques. Your day will start with the joy of teaching and making a lasting impact on the lives of young swimmers. In this position, you will be responsible for planning and implementing a progressive swim lesson and water safety schedule according to program guidelines for Currents. You will teach swimming skills and safety techniques to patrons of the Missoula Swim Academy program, ensuring that each child feels comfortable and safe in the water. Collaboration with the Lesson Supervisor is key to ensuring proper placement of students based on their ability levels. You will also perform record-keeping duties, observe the behavior of pool patrons to maintain order and safety, and maintain and inspect all instructional equipment and facilities for cleanliness and safety. Additionally, you will serve as a member of the Emergency Action Plan and perform other duties as assigned. This position requires a strong knowledge of waterpark and pool facility safety procedures, policies, and practices, as well as the ability to instruct on water safety and enforce rules with tact. You will need to demonstrate skills in following oral and written instructions, multitasking in a fast-paced environment, and providing effective customer service. The ability to communicate effectively and establish positive working relationships with diverse individuals is essential. You will also need to stay alert and identify potential emergency situations, lead and work with both adults and youth, and maintain professionalism and discretion in handling sensitive information.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and implement a progressive swim lesson and water safety schedule according to program guidelines for Currents.
  • Teach swimming skills and safety techniques to patrons of the Missoula Swim Academy program.
  • Create an environment of learning within the pool area, including an increasing level of comfort, technique, and safety for all lesson participants.
  • Collaborate with Lesson Supervisor to ensure proper placement of students based on ability level.
  • Perform record keeping duties, including completing paperwork in a timely methodical manner.
  • Observe the behavior of pool patrons to maintain order and safety.
  • Maintain and inspect all instructional equipment and facilities for cleanliness and safety.
  • Serve as a member of the Emergency Action Plan.
  • Perform other duties, as assigned.

Requirements

  • Any combination of training and experience with aquatics programming, instruction, or another relevant field.
  • Must be of legal age to perform the duties of the positions.
  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check.
  • Must have Water Safety Instructor (WSI) or Basic Swim Instructor (BSI) & CPR/First Aid/AED certifications or be able to obtain within 1 month of hire.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of facilitating swim lessons, including program planning and development, staff management, training, risk mitigation, etc.
  • Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, Missoula Swim Academy programs and other seasonal aquatics programming.
  • Ability to effectively break instructions down to specific skills and techniques with patience and tact.
  • Ability to resolve conflicts with facilitating outcomes while maintaining a calm demeanor.
