SUMMARY: The Peer Support Specialist provides peer support services to individuals with mental illness and co-occurring conditions. This role will function as a role model to peers by drawing on lived experiences and demonstrating effective coping and self-management skills. The Peer Support Specialist serves as a consumer advocate, providing information, support, and encouragement to individuals. This role will assist individuals in advancing their mental health recovery process.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED and one year experience.
  • Knowledge of relevant laws, regulations and policies regarding social service provision, reporting requirements, data practices and client rights.
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to cultural differences and special needs of various marginalized groups, and ability to consult with other providers regarding these.
  • Knowledge of community resources including functions of other social service agencies.
  • Knowledge of vulnerable adult laws and similar rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of peer recovery philosophy and practice as it applies to those adults with mental health challenges.
  • Skill in consultation, problem solving and coordination of service delivery.
  • Skill in providing support to individuals on a short-term basis.
  • Ability to prioritize work.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective professional work relationships and therapeutic relationships with individuals.
  • Ability to tolerate high levels of stress.
  • Must have Intermediate to advanced experience in MS Office Suite and electronic devices (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operation and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • A valid Class E Drivers’ License for positions that require driving personal or Agency vehicle on Agency business.
  • Must maintain a minimum Bodily Injury & Property Liability insurance limit of at least $50,000 for positions that require driving personal own vehicle (POV) on Agency business.
  • PPBH is a 24/7 Agency. All employees must be available as needed when required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide crisis response for recipient 24/7/365.
  • To provide immediate telephonic response to assess crisis and determine the risk, mental status, and appropriate response; provide face-to-face response as needed.
  • Will work as a member of an interdisciplinary Mobile Crisis Response Team and other professionals to develop a plan for recipients and/or revise existing plan components as appropriate.
  • Complete all documentation in a timely manner according to department policies and procedures. This includes mandated data tracking elements.
  • Provide coordination of care, directly to the person and the family across transitions of care, including in agency services and community resources.
  • Monitor the presenting mental illness and/or co-occurring symptoms.
  • Help maintain the self-respect, personal dignity and physical safety of each recipient.
  • Work cooperatively with all other staff and relate favorably to recipients and families.
  • Attend all mandatory staff meetings and consumer conferences or give advance notice to direct Supervisor as to reasons for inability to attend.
  • Receive supervision by direct Supervisor.
  • Report any changes in consumer’s condition, family situation, or needs to the appropriate personnel.
  • Report any accident or incident to the direct Supervisor or Designee.
  • Report to direct Supervisor or Designee any suspected abuse, neglect or exploitation of recipients.
  • Be familiar with PPBH policies and procedures including the securing of emergency services.
  • Be familiar with HIPAA regulations and abide by them.
  • Assure consumer’s rights are met and maintain consumer confidentiality at all times.
  • Obtain and keep current all training required by the agency.
  • Complete all required trainings, CEU’s and Certifications for Peer Recovery Support Specialist.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule which allows for evening and weekend hours as may be required to respond to individual needs.
  • Able to drive to locations within the Program service area.
  • Perform any other duties as required by Supervisor.
