About the position

The Middle School Special Education Teacher at COMPASS School plays a crucial role in providing individualized education to students aged 6-21 with various disabilities. This position emphasizes a therapeutic approach to instruction, integrating academic and social learning for students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). Teachers are responsible for developing lesson plans, monitoring student progress, and collaborating with other staff to create a supportive learning environment.

Responsibilities

  • Foster a therapeutic approach to instruction by integrating academic and social learning.
  • Develop lessons, plans, and structured activities to meet students' academic, behavioral, emotional, and social goals.
  • Read, review, and internalize assigned students' Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
  • Plan, prepare, and align lessons with state standards and student instructional goals.
  • Award grades by adhering to the Grading and Attendance policy.
  • Maintain and track behavior points with students daily.
  • Submit lesson plans that include social-emotional learning activities.
  • Adopt and integrate feedback for best teaching practices.
  • Foster a rigorous learning environment to challenge students.
  • Collaborate with staff to extend lessons to real-world experiences.
  • Establish and post clear objectives and essential questions for lessons.
  • Compile data to write educational assessments in accordance with COMPASS guidelines.
  • Attend IEP meetings and parent-teacher conferences.
  • Observe, evaluate, and report on student progress.
  • Meet compliance requirements as required by DESE and state laws.
  • Establish and maintain a classroom management system.
  • Prepare materials and maintain classroom bulletin boards.
  • Set up and update a classroom library of resources.
  • Attend daily duty on time to support building operations.
  • Recruit and co-lead a student advisory or club.

Requirements

  • Massachusetts Teaching License (Required)
  • Experience in special education and working with students with disabilities.
