About the position

The Medical Technologist-Technical Specialist in Blood Bank at the Veterans Health Administration serves as an expert in Immunohematology, providing authoritative advice and consultation to bench-level technologists. This role involves performing complex tests, managing quality control activities, and ensuring compliance with regulatory guidelines, all while working independently under the guidance of the Blood Bank Supervisory Medical Technologist.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all duties of GS-9 bench technologists as needed to maintain comprehensive coverage of the Blood Bank.
  • Interpret complex crossmatch and antibody problems in the absence of the SMT and provide technical assistance to technologists.
  • Manage quality control/quality assurance activities related to blood product irradiation, including training staff and maintaining documentation.
  • Assist the SMT in process improvement and customer service initiatives.
  • Review accreditation and regulatory guidelines to ensure compliance.
  • Complete required in-services including training in Joint Commission Compliance and OSHA Safety Compliance.
  • Engage in continuing medical education to improve expertise in the field.
  • Aid in maintaining procedure manuals and compliance with accreditation guidelines.
  • Perform validation studies and provide in-service training to bench technologists.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Proficient in spoken and written English.
  • Certification as a MT, MLS, or CLS from ASCP-BOC, ASCP-BOR, or AMT is required.
  • A bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science or a related field is required, along with completion of a clinical practice program.
  • At least one year of experience equivalent to GS-9 level in a clinical laboratory setting is required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in blood banking and immunohematology is preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge of laboratory technology and regulatory requirements is beneficial.
