About the position

The Medical Technologist I - Microbiology position at Trinity Health involves performing routine and specialized laboratory procedures to support the diagnosis and treatment of patients. This role is essential in ensuring accurate clinical test results in a high-complexity laboratory environment, adhering to established protocols and quality assurance standards. The position is part-time, specifically during weekend shifts, and offers opportunities for career advancement and flexible work schedules.

Responsibilities

  • Performs specimen processing and microscopy procedures, including inoculation of media and examination of stained smears.
  • Conducts tests for detection and identification of infectious agents.
  • Determines organism antimicrobial susceptibility through testing.
  • Ensures efficient workflow and timely test turnaround within departmental limits.
  • Produces clear and accurate electronic and written patient reports.
  • Provides verbal patient reports with appropriate documentation.
  • Reviews patient reports for accuracy and completeness, making corrections as needed.
  • Operates and maintains laboratory equipment, performing preventive and corrective maintenance.
  • Recognizes and troubleshoots technical and administrative problems, initiating corrective actions.
  • Participates in the Department's Quality Assurance and Improvement Program, maintaining related records.
  • Assists in internal and external education programs, staying updated on relevant policies and regulations.
  • Interacts with healthcare professionals regarding patient care issues.
  • Utilizes resources efficiently and safely, working with infectious and hazardous substances.
  • Follows laboratory procedures for specimen handling, test analyses, and reporting.
  • Identifies and corrects problems affecting test performance or reporting.
  • Documents corrective actions for deviations from performance specifications.
  • Ensures patient test results are reported only after corrective actions are taken.
  • Assists in training and evaluating other testing personnel.
  • Evaluates test methodology for clinical use and verifies test procedures.
  • Maintains inventory and storage of laboratory supplies and equipment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Clinical Laboratory Technology, biological, chemical or related science; or a baccalaureate degree with relevant coursework and clinical laboratory experience.
  • New graduate to 5 years of experience in a clinical laboratory setting.
  • Current or eligible ASCP, AMT, or NCA certification as a Medical Technologist, with certification to be obtained within 12 months of employment.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with other personnel.
  • Demonstrates basic computer literacy and proficiency in English communication.
  • Competence in performing routine and specialized Clinical Bacteriology procedures.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Serology/Immunology, Molecular, TB/Mycology, or willingness to train in these areas.
