About the position

The Advanced Medical Support Assistant (AMSA) position is a vital administrative role within the Primary Care and Community Clinics Service at the Tucson VA Medical Center. The AMSA provides essential support to outpatient clinics, the patient call center, and the consult team, ensuring efficient operations and high-quality patient care. This position requires collaboration with interdisciplinary teams and involves managing appointment schedules, processing patient information, and enhancing the patient experience.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members including pharmacists, social workers, providers, and nurses.
  • Maintain appointment schedules and schedule special studies or labs.
  • Screen and receive phone calls, determining the nature of requests and providing information as needed.
  • Interpret provider orders in accordance with VHA national scheduling guidelines.
  • Communicate directly with patients to obtain required information and assess their needs.
  • Prepare written correspondence to notify patients of normal lab results.
  • Verify and update patient demographics and insurance information.
  • Process incoming secured messaging through MyHealthyVet.
  • Manage patient systems to verify and validate accuracy and resolve concerns.
  • Evaluate patient information and clinic schedules to determine immediate appointment needs.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • Six months of experience in clerical, office, customer service, or administrative work.
  • One year above high school education or equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • One year of experience equivalent to the GS-5 grade level.

Nice-to-haves

  • Advanced knowledge of medical terminology and health care processes.
  • Experience with electronic medical records and patient care systems.
