About the position

The Medical Specialist II at the Institute for Community Living, Inc. is a Direct Support Professional responsible for providing specialized medical support to individuals with developmental disabilities. This role involves managing medical appointments, administering medications, and ensuring the health and safety of the individuals served. The Medical Specialist collaborates closely with nursing staff and management to maintain comprehensive medical records and facilitate community integration for the individuals in their care.

Responsibilities

• Perform medical responsibilities under the supervision of a nurse, including communication of medical appointment reports and medication changes.
• Make medical appointments and ensure all provider findings are documented and followed up on.
• Arrange transportation for individuals to medical appointments and ensure they have necessary medication orders upon return.
• Complete medical summary records and update nursing communication logs after medical visits.
• Attend meetings with nursing and management to provide summaries of medical appointments and follow-up recommendations.
• Ensure medications are ordered and documented correctly, and check for expired medications and medical supplies.
• Interact regularly with staff and individuals supported to maintain a supportive environment.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• At least one year of experience providing direct services to adults with intellectual disabilities or closely related experience.
• Currently AMAP certified and maintain certification for employment.
• Current clean New York State driver's license.

Nice-to-haves

• Direct care experience with individuals with intellectual and/or physical disabilities.
• Current SCIP-R, CPR/SFA certifications.
