About the position
The Medical Records Technician (Release of Information) position at the Department of Veterans Affairs involves reviewing and processing requests for patient protected health information (PHI) within the Health Information Management (HIM) section at the Butler VA Medical Center. The role is crucial in ensuring compliance with laws governing the confidentiality of medical records while providing necessary information to veterans and authorized requestors.
Responsibilities
- Evaluate the adequacy of completed authorization forms.
- Screen requests for information to determine urgency and prioritize accordingly.
- Assist veterans and others in determining the nature of their requests.
- Apply public laws and regulations governing confidentiality of medical records.
- Process incoming requests for Release of Information (ROI).
- Evaluate the validity of each request and determine the information to be released.
- Ensure proper authorization exists before releasing information.
- Log and track requests using the ROI computer package.
- Provide advisory and technical assistance regarding the release of information.
- Search records to compose responses and retrieve necessary data.
- Review health records to identify materials for release.
- Compose responses to routine requests for patient information.
Requirements
- U.S. Citizenship is required.
- Proficiency in written and spoken English is mandatory.
- One year of creditable experience in medical terminology and health records, or an associate degree in health information technology/management, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
