About the position

The Medical Office Technician (Lab) position at Carilion Clinic Family Medicine in Daleville involves providing day-to-day staffing in an outpatient clinic setting, both clinically and administratively. The role is accountable for performing all responsibilities of the Health Assistant (HAA) as well as clinical assistant responsibilities based on training, education, and competency. The technician will create a positive experience for patients, perform various testing, maintain laboratory equipment, and ensure compliance with safety regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Welcoming and assisting patients as they move throughout the clinic.
  • Performing HAA job duties as detailed in the HAA job description.
  • Performing Clinical Assistant job duties as detailed in the Clinical Assistant job description.
  • Conducting waived and other testing in-house based on available equipment and documented training.
  • Maintaining the laboratory without supervision.
  • Obtaining patient specimens using appropriate equipment and technique.
  • Verifying patient identification and order ensuring accuracy.
  • Reviewing pertinent patient history associated with blood draws.
  • Assessing the most appropriate blood draw site and selecting gauge needle.
  • Observing safety regulations and universal precautions in collection, processing, and disposal of laboratory specimens.
  • Preparing samples for transport to reference laboratories ensuring proper labeling.
  • Reporting abnormal or critical results to the appropriate physician or clinical team member.
  • Cleaning, maintaining, performing quality controls, and calibrating laboratory equipment.
  • Maintaining a neat, clean, and well-stocked work area.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • One year experience in physician office laboratory preferred.
  • Phlebotomy certification required at time of hire or within one year.
  • Certified nursing assistant preferred by some practices.
  • AHA BLS-HCP required within first 90 days of hire.
  • Effective interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills required.
  • Keen attention to detail, superb dexterity, and eye-hand coordination.
  • Organized and self-motivated.
  • Proficient in the use of electronic medical records and clinical/clerical office procedures.

Nice-to-haves

  • Clerical and medical terminology knowledge preferred.
