The Phlebotomist will obtain and prepare specimens for analysis and performs various screening tests. This role involves obtaining blood specimens and collecting nonblood specimens such as urine, sputum, and throat swabs for laboratory testing. The Phlebotomist will also perform screening tests and report results, process specimens to prepare them for laboratory testing, and prepare specimens for reference laboratory dispatch and testing. Additionally, the role requires resolving ambiguous and/or unusual test orders by contacting the physician of the order, pathologist, nursing station, or reference laboratory, and referring unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification before collecting samples or processing specimens. The Phlebotomist will make the supervisor aware of unresolved orders and contribute to the general laboratory functions and institutional needs. This position requires attending regular department staff meetings and in-service training, maintaining compliance with laboratory and hospital policies and procedures, and safety practices, and keeping the work area neat and clean and restocking daily supplies.
