About the position

The Medical Laboratory Tech. LIS Billing Coordinator at Rivers Health is responsible for overseeing the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and ensuring accurate coding and billing for laboratory procedures. This role involves monitoring publications for updates, educating staff and physicians, maintaining the charge master, and coordinating with IT to resolve system issues. The position requires a strong understanding of medical billing, compliance, and laboratory operations, along with the ability to provide training and support to laboratory personnel.

Responsibilities

  • Review bulletins and monitor publications for coding and billing updates.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Medicare and commercial insurance coverage guidelines.
  • Proactively monitor specific tests known to create billing problems.
  • Assist with educating referring physicians and staff to ensure accounts are coded and billed correctly.
  • Assist in maintaining accurate charge master for laboratory procedures.
  • Review edits and controllable write-offs and examine existing processes for improvement.
  • Attend Revenue Compliance and Controllable Write-off meetings with management.
  • Review daily exception reports and make corrections.
  • Monitor temporary Laboratory Specimen accounts.
  • Correct and code miscellaneous testing charges for reference labs and audit bills against incoming reference lab charges.
  • Assist in regular review of the laboratory charge master.
  • Oversee and coordinate all Laboratory Information System related activity across different laboratory sections.
  • Coordinate activity with Hospital Information System applications with the IT department.
  • Ensure the Laboratory Information System operates accurately and efficiently with minimal errors.
  • Address hardware issues to ensure staff have working equipment.
  • Work with the Laboratory Information System Analyst to maintain pricing database and update CPT codes and pricing.
  • Resolve billing edits and discrepancies with the Laboratory Information System Analyst.
  • Keep Laboratory management informed of system problems and recommend resolutions.
  • Verify system accuracy through scheduled audits.
  • Ensure instrument interfaces perform accurately and efficiently.
  • Review hospital and lab system reports to ensure all tests are resulted, reported, charged, or cancelled/credited appropriately.
  • Update the database as laboratory needs change.
  • Work with department supervisors to build and change tests in the database.
  • Maintain and update database for reference laboratory testing and interface functions.
  • Install software updates and validate expected documentation with the Laboratory Information System Analyst.
  • Serve as the primary contact for all computer-related matters in the lab.
  • Inform laboratory management of new products and training for Laboratory Information System activities.
  • Help maintain Laboratory Information System operating manuals and ensure compliance with regulatory agencies.
  • Maintain a downtime log for Laboratory Information System issues.
  • Oversee training of lab personnel on the Laboratory Information System and evaluate competency.
  • Develop and conduct training programs for all employees.
  • Prepare training and educational materials and provide continuing education as needed.
  • Ensure daily operation reports meet the needs of supervisors and management.
  • Ensure statistics are accurate and timely for required reports.
  • Complete, update, and review policy and procedure manuals as necessary.
  • Submit service requests to Laboratory Information System vendor for software changes and improvements.
  • Analyze and troubleshoot computer issues and assist the hospital IT department in resolving problems.
  • Provide 24/7 emergency application support for lab staff.
  • Serve as a liaison between the laboratory and other hospital departments.
  • Test, verify, and record results of software changes and system enhancements.
  • Maintain Laboratory Information System security access and compliance with HIPAA regulations.
  • Manage and build reports within the Laboratory Information System.
  • Assist department supervisors in writing reports for medical studies and cases.
  • Manage the Laboratory Information System by providing troubleshooting and equipment assistance.
  • Maintain hardware for Laboratory Information System and work with vendors for repairs and updates.
  • Assist with interfacing laboratory test codes and results with other hospital systems.
  • Help maintain lab computers and troubleshoot errors after updates.
  • Assist lab assistants with order issues and maintain current information for physicians.
  • Work with Help Desk to maintain laboratory label printers and minimize downtime.
  • Assist physician offices with laboratory test orders or results issues.
  • Troubleshoot analyzers and maintain middleware for Point of Care instruments.
  • Serve on hospital committees as needed or requested.
  • Follow all standard safety precautions and complete required competency assessments annually.
  • Promote and maintain patient safety and demonstrate knowledge of unit-specific equipment and procedures.
  • Participate in quality improvement activities and comply with corporate and departmental policies.
  • Maintain hospital confidentiality and interact courteously with patients and staff.
  • Promote a positive environment and maintain an efficient workplace.
  • Practice AIDET with every patient.

Requirements

  • Associate degree and/or Baccalaureate degree in medical technology or related field.
  • Eligibility for ASCP and WV License.
  • Two to five years coding experience preferred.
  • Three years or greater of laboratory experience preferred.
  • Proficiency and experience in laboratory computer systems and database management preferred.
  • Ability to perform vein and/or capillary punctures.
  • Ability to read and understand laboratory instruction manuals.
  • Ability to identify and address the special needs of patients of all ages.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with laboratory compliance and regulatory standards.
  • Knowledge of quality control procedures in laboratory settings.
  • Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) systems.
