About the position

The Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) III evaluates, assist in the interpreting of results, and analyzes blood and body fluids using both automated and complex manual methods following established policies and procedures to ensure the highest quality of laboratory results within established timeframes. The NEW Orlando Health Lake Mary Hospital represents Orlando Health's continued commitment to the Seminole County community, which we have proudly served for 40 years. As a comprehensive acute care facility, the hospital offers a full scope of medical and surgical services, including cardiovascular, general surgery, orthopedics, and women's services with labor and delivery, alongside a future NICU. Opening with 124 beds, the 455,000 square foot hospital will be able to expand to up to 240 beds. State-of-the-art facilities include operating rooms, catheterization labs, interventional radiology, a vascular lab, an ICU and a full-service emergency department. For labor and delivery, the hospital features six private suites thoughtfully designed to make you feel at home while providing exceptional medical care. Each suite includes a hydrotherapy tub for laboring, shower, recliner, adjustable bed with a squat bar, wireless and waterproof heart rate monitors for mom and baby, a smart board that integrates patient and nurse information from Epic, WiFi, and televisions. These modern amenities ensure a comfortable and supportive environment for every patient.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluates specimens for quality and preanalytical errors
  • Verifies results and quality control data for accuracy and reliability
  • Performs, evaluates, and documents all quality control, preventive maintenance and troubleshooting procedures
  • Provides guidance and direction to other team members with less experience
  • Works independently within broad guidelines, rather than prescribed procedures
  • Assists with troubleshooting problems and recommending possible solutions
  • Explains difficult or sensitive information in a manner that is easy to understand
  • Performs high complexity testing
  • Verifies instrument performance standards including linearity, reportable range and method comparisons
  • Demonstrates computer system proficiency including ordering, resulting, and inquiry functions
  • Ensures proper utilization and preparation of reagents and supplies
  • Assists with inventory management
  • Communicates critical results to the patient caregiver
  • Provides guidance on potential sources of error or interfering substances
  • Utilizes theoretical knowledge and critical thinking skills to help troubleshoot unusual situations
  • Reports unresolved issues to the immediate supervisor
  • Evaluates accuracy of results considering all phases of testing
  • Assists in the development of departmental policies and procedures for test performance, quality control, and preventative maintenance
  • Reports work activities, instrument issues, supply issues and pending work at shift change to the oncoming MLS
  • Responds to work related technical inquiries
  • Assists in the training of new team members and students
  • Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Successful completion of an approved clinical laboratory training internship
  • Maintains current Florida license as a Medical Technologist certified in the specialty or specialties required by the laboratory section(s) assigned
  • National Certification such as American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB), or American Medical Technologists (AMT) preferred
  • Two (2) years experience required
