About The Position

The Public Health Center is seeking a Dari/Pashto Speaking Medical Interpreter/Translator to facilitate culturally and linguistically appropriate communication between Public Health staff and non-English speaking clients. This part-time role involves providing in-person interpretation primarily in clinic settings, as well as in home and community health environments. The position is integral to the clinic's multi-disciplinary teams and aims to serve vulnerable populations effectively.

Requirements

  • Must possess the DSHS Medical Interpreter Certification or Screening Certificate, or be working on obtaining certification.
  • Bilingual in writing and speaking, in English and Dari and Pashto.
  • Previous experience as a medical interpreter is required.
  • Willingness to interpret regarding reproductive health care and in culturally sensitive situations.
  • Knowledge of the cultural beliefs and values of the relevant populations.
  • Knowledge of National Council on Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC) Code of Ethics.
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology and diseases, and human anatomy.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of a formal Interpreter Training Program such as 'Bridging the Gap'.
  • At least 2 years of experience in a health care setting.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret communication between Public Health staff and clients to provide Public Health services.
  • Interpret for health care providers in reproductive health clinics to elicit sexual histories and explain birth control methods.
  • Interpret in culturally sensitive situations regarding issues such as child abuse, domestic violence, and HIV/AIDS.
  • Assist clients in filling out forms for program eligibility, consent, registration, and medical history.
  • Provide general information and referrals to Public Health Services and related community resources.
  • Facilitate efficient delivery of Public Health services within productivity guidelines.
  • Check and retrieve phone messages, look up clinic schedules, and make appointments as needed.
  • Explain relevant cultural beliefs and behaviors to Public Health staff that may affect health outcomes.
  • Promote positive interpersonal communication with coworkers and the public.
