About the position

The Medical Instrument Technician (EKG) position at the Omaha VA Medical Center involves monitoring patients' EKG waveforms from a centralized station and communicating any significant changes to clinical staff. This role is crucial for ensuring patient safety and effective cardiac monitoring within the Telemetry Department. The technician will also be responsible for maintaining telemetry supplies, mentoring new staff, and ensuring the cleanliness of the work area and equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret cardiac rhythms, heart rate, and arrhythmias and communicate them to appropriate staff promptly.
  • Report all changes in heart rate/rhythm to nursing staff via verbal or phone communications.
  • Maintain nursing unit lists with phone numbers and adjust throughout the shift as needed.
  • Maintain telemetry supplies.
  • Monitor patient's rhythm and record strips every shift with accurate calculations of PR, QT, QRS, HR values, and abnormal/irregular strips as needed.
  • Color code patient's monitor tracing to reflect their status.
  • Research patient's charts for significant history related to rhythm disturbances and monitoring parameters.
  • Assign new telemetry boxes for new admits.
  • Clean telemetry boxes and wires as needed after discharge/transfer.
  • Ensure work area and equipment are clean.
  • Troubleshoot problems with monitoring equipment.
  • Act as a mentor or preceptor to lower grade technicians.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen to apply for this job.
  • Proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical examination.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is required.
  • Participation in the COVID-19 vaccination program is required.
  • At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level for GS-4 to GS-7 positions.

Nice-to-haves

  • Telemetry and/or LPN experience.
  • Licensure or Certification is desirable at GS-6 or above.
